Just a Trace 04:39
If there’s one thing that I know It’s that the sleep is first to go Regret’s the blackest coffee you can buy They say it’s darkest near the dawn But if you keep your curtains drawn You’ll never notice when the daylight breaks the sky And I can finally wash these sheets And rinse away her stale perfume But I can finally walk these streets I can smell the flowers as they bloom It’s the end of one more day and the coming of the night She's begun to slip away, retreating like the light The image of her face once burned in my mind Is only just a trace, and now it’s fading fast with time Think I discovered heaven. In those two or three short seconds Between when I'd wake and when I'd think of her If that could be eternity Then I could finally rest in peace And stop losing sleep for things that never were PC/C: –– They say it marches on; they say it flies But I know whoever said those things has never said a long goodbye C: ––

Two short years blew by so fast When I bite the bullet, finally ask Does this thing have the legs to last? Should we sign the line for one more year? Sitting on the kitchen floor Her face says she can take no more She turns her head to face the door But she can't say the things that I can't hear Her tear-streaked cheeks speak louder than the words that she won't say: "I think that we could be in love just maybe, not today." Maybe somewhere farther down the line Maybe in a different place and time Maybe there's a chance that we could find a way Maybe not today Six months now since she moved out And I can say without a doubt I've grown and learned a lot about The ways that I fell short and let her down Spent half a year as half a man Gave up on all my best laid plans I’m moving on as best I can I know in time my heart will come around My blood red eyes sigh deeper than the breath that I can't take I think that we could be in love but baby, not today Maybe somewhere farther down the line Maybe in a different place and time Maybe there's a chance that we could find a way... Maybe one day it will all be fine Maybe someday I can call you mine Maybe there's a chance that we could find a way Maybe not today

Tell me how your story ends Does he call you, are you still friends Late at night, you're alone in bed Will it ever not feel strange How 'bout you, do you have regrets Does her broken heart make you upset If you could do it all again What exactly would you change Winter nights were extra cold I wondered how a love so old could Without warning just up and fold I think maybe you knew Days passed and I tried to be strong Told myself no one's right, no one's wrong But deep down I've been singing this song Anyone but you Love can been worn like a watch Years go by and you never take it off Then one day the hands decide to stop So you go out and find a different clock
