I’m a flying fish thrown around by currents
Swept into tar-balls and man-of-war tentacles

In open water I am prey

Like a sunflash, I dart among the waves
trying to stay in front of treacherous predators

The water boils in their wake as I try escape
Fins pound hard but not hard enough, I am almost theirs.

For a moment of breathlessness
Mouth opening and closing
Eyes roaming the shorelines.

I am safe until taloned birds
Swoop in from the sun to remind me…

I belly flop back with a splash, and the bubbles rise
